The story begins simply with a young race car driver, Jo Shimamura, becoming involved in a nasty crash (knife in a tire, yikes!) and is subsequently hauled off in a mysterious ambulance. Many adaptations of this Shotaro Ishinomori manga have see the light of day, but this film from 1966 was the very first time the cyborg soldiers of Professor Gilmore came to life on a screen brought to you by the great old studio, Toei Animation. Cyborg 009 represents a story about brand new heroes in a (once long ago) modern age heading towards an uncertain future. A product of the 1960s, Cyborg 009 reflects the era with the rise and hope of big technology, growing social equality and Cold War politics. Because with age comes wisdom, or so I keep telling myself as I keep adding up solar cycles and still retain the heart and soul of my youth. Or, perhaps that is a mistranslation I prefer ‘Old is Cool’. Towards the end of the series, Jet managed to save Joe from burning up in atmospheric re-entry, by catching him and diverting his fall so both of them would land in a lake.ĭue to the animation limitations at the time as well as the manga seeming to forget it, Jet's acceleration power was discarded, with him only able to demonstrate his flight capabilities.Cyborg 009 equals the epitome of ‘Old School’. However, after becoming part of the team, he was shown to to take up the job of American football whenever he was not available for a mission. Little to nothing is known of Jet's past before he was converted into a cyborg. He displays a somewhat tough, "big brother"-like personality, and takes his job of fighting very seriously.
His prominent features include a sharp, pointed nose, long windswept dark hair, a large squared jaw, and slightly pointed ears.Īlthough he does not get to be part of the team very often, Jet is willing to help out when the need arises. Although he appears in grayscale due to the series only being animated in black and white, it can be assumed that his uniform is the pastel lavender shade that it was in the films. Jet's design from the first two animated films was carried over into this adaptation.
